New Member FAQ
Where and when do we meet?
We meet Monday-Friday in APP 111 (or outside when the weather permits) at 4:30, rain, snow, or shine (unless there’s thunder or classes are cancelled!). We also occasionally have small groups meet at APP 111 to do Sunday Morning Long Runs, but these are not considered official practices.
Is practice mandatory?
Nope, it’s optional! You can come as many times during the week as you like, so don’t sweat it if you have class during practice!
How do practices work?
Practices begin with eBoard members (generally the president(s) if they are present) discussing happenings within the club, as well as discussing who intends to run what! This gives runners an opportunity to run with people at their compatible ability level. Most runs are on the road, but feel free to switch it up and hit the nature preserve or other new routes! Additionally, we often have runners doing Workout Wednesday, and when we have interest we will post workouts on our Groupme. We generally start running at around 4:45, and runners finish at various times. If you have a backpack, we generally have members that will allow you to store in their car!
How competitive is running club?
It is whatever you want it to be! We have many members who choose to train to compete throughout the year, while others come to run for fun or to get in shape. All meets and practices are optional, so it is up to you how much/little you want to race. Although our club has a fun and inclusive atmosphere, we do have dedicated and talented members. Our men’s team has won the Northeast Regional cross country meet twice (2015 and 2016), and last year one male and one female finished top 10 in the half marathon at NIRCA Track Nationals.
What is the racing schedule like?
In the fall we compete in mostly cross country races. We host a cross country meet and attend 3-4 other meets. In the Spring, we compete in 2-3 indoor track meets, 2-3 outdoor meets, host our own outdoor track meet (Banana Relays) and participate in a few local road races.

I'm a sprinter, can I still join?
Yes! We compete in a bunch of track meets in the Spring with many short distance events. You can wait until the Spring to run with us, or feel free to come to practice during the Fall as well, even if you don't want to compete in cross country races.
What is NIRCA?
NIRCA is the National Intercollegiate Running Club Association. Essentially, it is the governing body of all running clubs, and facilitates communication and competition among the clubs. In the Fall, we attend NIRCA Regionals, where we compete against other Northeast teams. Additionally, we attend NIRCA Nationals in the Fall as well, where we compete against teams from all over the country. In the Spring, we attend NIRCA Track Nationals, which consists of track events and a half marathon! Once again, all meets are optional and you don't need to compete in NIRCA meets to join our club.
Is this a social club?
Yes! Besides running together, we have pasta parties, team dinners and all sorts of other social events. Our team is very close, and many members have found their best friends by joining!
How do I join?
At the beginning of the semester, you will need to fill out a B-engaged form, which will be posted here and on our Instagram page (@burcrunning). Other than that, show up to practice whenever you'd like!
What should you do before/after a run?
Everyone has their own means of keeping their bodies healthy after running! However, we recommend that you follow a regular stretching plan before and after your runs; this can help speed up your recovery, support full range of motion, and minimize risk of injury. Feel free to use the following link as a resource for stretches. In addition, don’t be hesitant to ask other members for suggestions on stretches; many will be happy to help!
